The house

Nanpantan Hall is a Victorian country house on the south-western edge of Charnwood Forest, a few miles from Loughborough. The building is set in several acres of grounds, with mature woodland behind and open views across the Charnwood landscape to the front. The hall has twenty-six bedrooms and is used primarily for residential retreats and extended courses.

The interior retains the proportions of its Victorian origins: generous reception rooms, a large dining room, and a conservatory overlooking the garden. The grounds include a walled garden and areas of managed woodland. The house is not open to the public except during School events.

The School has used Nanpantan for residential work since the early 1990s. It remains one of the principal country houses of the School in England, alongside Waterperry House in Oxfordshire.

What happens here

Nanpantan is used for residential weekends and week-long retreats throughout the year. The programme includes philosophy retreats, meditation intensives, and arts weekends drawing on the School's curriculum. Many students attend Nanpantan events regularly over many years; the house has a settled, familiar character as a result.

Regional philosophy courses for the Midlands run from Nanpantan alongside those at Mandeville Place. The house is staffed by members of the School who live on the property during residential events.
