Our School
We are a not-for-profit charitable institute, incorporated in 1976 to study the world’s philosophies and traditions in a practical and systematic way in order to discover the first principles
of being, knowledge and causation, the essential nature of mankind and the laws governing the creation.
We welcome all students interested in the pursuit of spiritual and emotional well-being, regardless of education, occupation, age, culture or religion.
Not only do we seek to raise the wisdom and understanding of our students, but we also encourage them to put what they have learned into practice. Our lives can be enriched from studying,
testing, evaluating and applying the philosophical principles presented at the School.
We are not a degree- or certificate-granting institute. The School offers a ten-week Introductory Course in Practical Philosophy and, for many students, this is as far as their interest takes
them. For those who wish to study further, the School offers successive programs for in-depth study that include meditation, retreats, and volunteer service at the School. For some, the study
of Practical Philosophy is life-long.
Our Students
Located in downtown Toronto, with a satellite location in St. Catharines, Ontario, the School of Philosophy serves a diverse student body.
Our students are men and women ranging in age from their early teens to late 70’s who come from a variety of backgrounds, and include followers of many of the world’s religions, and many
who follow no religion at all; they are schoolteachers, business executives, labourers, engineers, retirees, university and college students, dancers, artists, project managers, computer
scientists, musicians, trades and service people.
While our backgrounds and experience are diverse, each of us appreciates the common thread of fellowship afforded by the principles taught at the School.
Our Staff
The School is run by volunteers, with the sole paid position being that of our Office Administrator.
All senior students (approximately 50 in all) volunteer at the School as tutors, members of the Board, or as members of service teams for administration, catering, cleaning and maintenance
of the grounds. Volunteer positions rotate regularly.

Our History
The School of Philosophy in Toronto is one of over 50 Schools worldwide that originate from the School of Economic Science in London, England.
The London School was founded in 1937 by Leon MacLaren amidst the severe economic depression of the 1930s. Seeking to explore new possibilities for a system that would bring about economic
justice, Mr. MacLaren was naturally led to the study of philosophy - "the love of wisdom" - in order to gain deeper insights into the natural laws governing humanity and the origin of those
laws. During the late 1950s philosophy became the School’s central subject of study and practice and has remained so ever since.
Mr. MacLaren remained the School's leader until his death in 1994, when he was replaced by Donald Lambie. While more than 50 different Schools in locations such as New Zealand, Dublin, the
West Indies, New York, Boston and Toronto are independent, they all share the same philosophical material that originates from the London School.
In 1976, a BBC radio and television director, Geoffrey Ramsey, returned home after nearly two decades of study and teaching at the London School to found the School of Philosophy in Toronto.
After several years of being housed within other schools and organizations, the School of Philosophy in Toronto found its present home at 29 Madison Avenue, a beautiful old red-brick house
in the heart of downtown Toronto. In the early 1990s the School opened a satellite campus in the Niagara Region. Today the School is led by Paraic Lally.
